On behalf of the students, faculty, and staff of Zane North School, it is my pleasure to welcome you to the Zane North School official web site. In order to promote a more compassionate and responsible society, Zane North’s students, parents, staff, and administration have joined together in a “TEAM” approach to educating our students. This philosophy includes educating the “whole child” - emotionally, socially, academically, and physically. Our team approach emphasizes academic achievement as well as the development of moral character and civic virtue. In so doing, Zane North School has become a fun, safe learning environment for our students, staff, and administration. As we join hands to educate your child, I would like to take this opportunity to express my gratitude for your commitment to support our efforts. I look forward with great anticipation to joining with you on our journey toward educational excellence. As we work together, Zane North will shine with the success of its “Stars”.

Collingswood Middle School Presents....GREASE!

Friday, May 17th and Saturday, May 18th , at 7:00 PM with a matinee on Saturday afternoon at 2:00 PM. Don't miss a special, once every 5 years, staff production on Saturday night at 7:00 PM!
A Creative World of Collaboration!

Kindergarten students traveled to the Collingswood High School to visit art teacher, Mrs. Winkler, and meet their art buddies. Dr. Oswald, Collingswood Superintendent, joined Mrs. Keller, Kindergarten teacher, Mrs. Kuzio, paraprofessional, and Mr. Santo in accompanying the students on this adventure. The walking trip through the neighborhood gave the children a glimpse residential gardens. Students compared the residential gardens to the newly installed Rain Garden at Zane North. Upon their arrival, the children were given an ice cream snack. Then Mrs. Winkler led the children in discussion of the famous artist Vincent Van Gough, sunflowers, and his works. Happily they painted sun flowers and glued real sunflower seeds to their project. When the art works were finished they were given a tour of the Collingswood PAWS tv studio by teacher, Mrs. Danielle Armano, and her crew. Excitement filled the air as the children had the opportunity to become weather personalities and view themselves on television prompters. With siblings at CMS and CHS the kindergarten students were thrilled to see the “big” school with a “thousand’ of steps. Returning back to Zane North the children began to talk about careers such as an artist and/or tv producer.
Rain Garden Planting "Thinking Globally, Acting Locally"

The Rain Garden at Zane North is blooming with color and has already begun to attract visitors. Butterflies and Zane North kindergarteners were seen fluttering through the garden on Tuesday for a tour led by Mike Haberland, master gardener and environmental resources specialist from Rutgers.

The kindergarteners examined the various plants and noted the softness of the “fluffed” earth under their feet. The students touched the leaves of the Monarda plant, a.k.a. Bee Balm, and breathed in its citrusy aroma. They learned about the groupings of plants of the same species, sometimes called flower islands, that not only make the garden look beautiful, but help hummingbirds, butterflies and bees gather nourishment efficiently.

Later in the day, the kindergarteners released Painted Lady butterflies in the Rain Garden to enjoy some nectar from the ruby-red Columbine plants. Over the last 21 days, the class has been recording their observations of the caterpillars’ metamorphosis and were thrilled to be able to release their winged friends, nicknamed ButterFlyers, for their orange and black coloring, in the garden right outside their classroom.

The shrubs and perennial flowers that were planted this week in the garden by Zane North parent volunteers, Karen Chigounis of Perkins and Mike Haberland, will fill in as they mature and will have time to get well established before the summer heat. More plants will also be added once the locations of the stepping stones and benches, that the students have been busily making tiles for, are determined. Each class will have the opportunity to come to see what is growing in the garden over the next few weeks and will be planting additional plants on the edge of the garden. Thank you to our parent helpers that generously came out to lend a hand!
